The School of Life Sciences and Facility Management is located on an attractive campus on the left shore of the Lake of Zurich in Wädenswil. The Institute of Chemistry and Biological Chemistry is offering the opportunity of a

PhD Scholarship in Chemistry (Synthesis Polymeric Nanomaterials)

for a motivated student interested in gaining a PhD in the fields of Chemistry and Functional Materials. The PhD work will be carried out in partnership with Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Jia Wei Chew as the main doctoral advisor, and Metrohm Foundation Prof. Andrei Honciuc as the co-supervisor from Switzerland. The PhD candidate will be based for 2-3 years in Switzerland (ZHAW) and 1-2 years in Singapore (NTU).

Description

The research project will include broad areas of interests such as: synthesis of polymeric nanoparticles, amphiphilic systems, surfactants, smart polymeric materials, surface, interfacial chemistry and nanoparticle processing. More specifically, the PhD candidate will focus on the following projects:

-Development of synthetic methods for polymeric nanoparticles with amphiphilic and optoelectronic properties
-Development of column materials for chromatography in collaboration with industrial partners

The performance criteria will include publication of the scientific work in high-impact journals, filing of provisional patent applications, amenability to work in multicultural teams, and development of column materials with industrial partners.

Requirements

The ideal candidate should have a Master degree in Chemistry, Material Sciences or Chemical Engineering, publications in related fields and an excellent command of English. Knowledge of German is of advantage. The selection criteria are based on the dedication for laboratory work, skills and abilities for synthesis, and motivation for performing fundamental and applied research. To maintain eligibility for this PhD Scholarship, the candidate has to fulfil the graduation criteria of the doctoral program at NTU.
