Head of the NMR Facility

Department of Biology

Besides demonstrating an outstanding research profile in high-resolution NMR spectroscopy and expertise knowledge of NMR hardware, the successful candidate is an interactive personality with proven teaching abilities. The Head of Facility is expected to oversee the maintenance and upgrade of state of the art NMR equipment, to closely work with laboratories within the D-BIOL, to seek and implement existing technologies and further develop the NMR spectroscopy toolbox to investigate biological molecules. The Head of Facility will supervise technical staff to optimally run 6 high-field instruments ranging from 500 to 900 MHz. He/she will be expected to teach NMR modules at different levels, from undergraduate level courses (German or English) to graduate level courses (English). The D-BIOL will support the candidate in establishing an independent research program as well as in attracting third party funding. Research areas could include studying dynamics, intrinsically disordered proteins, interactions between proteins and RNA/carbohydrate/lipids/drugs and technology development for structural and dynamic analyses of proteins within large complexes. The Head of Facility will be part of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biophysics with strong links to other institutes in the D-BIOL. Interactions and joint projects with the life science groups and facilities at the Paul Scherrer Institute are encouraged.

The ideal candidate holds a PhD in biosciences. He/she has several years’ postdoctoral experience as well as experience in running an NMR facility and training students. The Department of Biology offers outstanding scientific opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary research projects, including close interactions with Life Science Zurich, a well-established platform for teaching and research, and with a network of research laboratories in diverse areas of biology. The initial employment is scheduled for three years and may be extended to an open-ended contract being subject to evaluation.
