The growth of renewable energy sources and the digital revolution lead to a profound change of the electrical grid and its main control components: high power switchgear. To proceed in shaping the technological advance, we are looking for an experimental physicist with PhD who will strengthen our Switchgear group in the department Power Products and Sensors at ABB Corporate Research in Baden-Dättwil, Switzerland. In this position, you will be part of an interdisciplinary team and apply scientific methods, combining experimental investigations and multi-physics simulations, in order to deepen the understanding of fundamental processes in switching arcs. With the knowledge gained, you develop innovative concepts for high power direct-current (DC) switching devices. After proving your ideas in the laboratory, you support product development until market launch. Apart from the scientific investigations, you contribute to the product development and suggest improvements to our existing switchgear portfolio.

Description

  • Conduct applied research in the area of switching and protection, e.g. ultrafast or hybrid switching
  • Develop novel concepts for DC-switchgear, e.g. for the reliable and efficient integration of renewable energy sources in existing or future DC-power grids
  • Actively contribute to the planning, setup, and execution of experiments
  • Apply and improve highly advanced simulation tools
  • Provide scientific and technical assistance for the development of innovative products
  • Closely cooperate with scientists and engineers at ABB business units and at universities

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent work experience in Physics or in a related field
  • Practical laboratory experience and excellent knowledge of measurement techniques
  • Expert knowledge in state-of-the-art simulation and data analysis tools for scientific investigations
  • Background in condensed matter physics, optics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, plasma physics or any other area related to electrical switchgear is of advantage, but not a must
  • Excellent scientific track record including outstanding academic results
  • Fluency in English and strong motivation to learn German
  • Motivation, initiative, creativity and team spirit
