LocationDübendorf, Zurich region, Switzerland

Your Mission

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

The Department of Process Engineering (Eng) has a vacancy beginning March or April 2018 for a

The Blue Diversion Autarky toilet is a source-separating toilet, meaning that water, urine and feces are diverted for separate collection and on-site treatment. Our current work is focused on field testing of the water and urine treatment modules.

The primary technology involved in the water treatment is an ultrafiltration membrane that supports the growth of a biofilm. The same water can then be continuously reused for hand washing and flushing. The main goal of urine treatment is urine stabilization, volume reduction through evaporation and resource recovery.

Specific Job Duties

  • Assisting the start-up and internal testing of the water and urine treatment modules

  • Collecting and analyzing samples from field testing (communal garden and communal living in Zurich)

  • Assisting in the maintenance of the treatment modules: replacing supplies, collecting salt precipitates, troubleshooting problems

  • Data processing and assisting in other experiments in the lab

You would be part of a multidisciplinary project, developing innovative treatment technologies and covering several aspects of sanitation. It is also an opportunity to work with full-scale prototypes and to learn analytical methods in the lab, as well as to get an insight of ongoing projects in water and urine treatment.
