Senior Scientist/Discovery Project Lead - Rare Disease (temporary,12 months)

We are seeking an outstanding Senior Scientist to work within the Neuroscience, Ophthalmology and Rare Disease (NORD) Discovery and Translation Area (DTA) at Roche. The focus of the position will be to lead early development programs and to provide preclinical support for clinic stage programs and partnership opportunities in the Rare Disease DTA with a particular emphasis on the development of new therapeutics for rare hematological diseases.

Reporting to Head of Discovery Rare Diseases, you will join an industry-leading Rare Disease department with a diverse portfolio of preclinical and clinical stage projects. You will present rare disease projects in early management boards, serving as a visionary leader committed to bringing novel medicines to patients in need. The position will be based in Basel, Switzerland.

Your responsibilities:

  • Champion and administer discovery aspects of rare disease projects as effective team member internally as well as externally with a specific focus on rare disease within the area of non-malignant hematology, hematological diseases.
  • Lead nonclinical activities and provide pharmacology and disease area expertise as part of a matrixed team for clinical stage programs.
  • Lead the preclinical functional experts’ team to jointly develop and execute a sustainable preclinical strategy in support and agreement with the overall projects development plan. Represent the preclinical team in the core project team.
  • Partner with leadership to develop a strategy for a sustainable preclinical development plan of novel drug candidates within the area of non-malignant hematology.
  • Identify and build relationships with key opinion leaders in areas of research focus.
  • Work closely with patient advocate and family organizations.
  • Nominate and triage partnering opportunities to expand the unit’s capabilities and drive the existing portfolio.
  • Represent discovery in licensing efforts and the Rare Disease unit and its strategy to key internal and external stakeholders.

You have a strong commitment to patients with rare disease, and genetically-defined diseases including those affecting children within the field of non-malignant hematology. In addition you bring:

  • Several years of experience leading a scientific research team in an industry setting including leading projects, research teams and serving as a mentor.
  • A PhD with professional and scientific experience in hematology, oncology, pharmacology or related field and have several years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry in preclinical research.
  • A track record of innovative research in the field of hematology, oncology, pharmacology or rare diseases, including publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience of identifying, coordinating and leading collaborations with external academic or biotech/pharma partners to achieve mutually successful working relationships is an advantage.
  • A demonstrated passion and commitment for rare disease drug discovery.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, flexibility and capacity to work and lead multidisciplinary teams.
