PhD in Advanced Statistical Analysis and Machine Learning applied in Sleep Medicine

The University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) is active in the fields of natural and built environment, economy, technological innovation, applied art, social work and health, learning and training. competition at the Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI), in particular at the Institute for Information Systems and Networking (ISIN) , for a PhD student. Level of employment 100%, 2 year contract (renewable).

Duties:

The Candidate will apply advanced statistical analysis and machine learning techniques in the sleep medicine field. The main aim will be to support the implementation of a platform for assisting sleep physicians during the different part of their work. The focus will be on the development of a methodology for improving the scoring of polisomnographies PSGs with a semi-automated procedure. Furthermore statistical analysis and data mining will be implemented to identify early markers of possible neurological disorders and of other pathologies. The student will have freedom in explore and in research and at the same time will be supervised by researchers with strong experience in the field. The student will actively participate to the project Eurostar SPAS, in collaboration with international SMEs and with the SITEM and Inselspital of Bern.

Requirements:

Essential

  • Bachelor e Master preferably in bio-medical engineering, or in another quantitative science as Math, Physics, Statistics, Informatics or similar.
  • Strong mathematics competences and strong motivation to do research and to publish.
  • Strong knowledge of advanced statistics and machine learning application.
  • Clear interest in doing an experimental thesis.
  • Good programming skills (Matlab/R/Python).

Desirable

  • Experience in medical data analysis (PSGs) is a plus.

Soft Skills

  • The candidate should be a responsible and communicative scientist.
  • Able to work independently but also in a group.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English.
