Are you a technician looking for a challenging professional experience to further your career?  If so, joining CERN’s TTE programme may very well give you that challenge.  This position as a Mechatronic Technician is part of our prestigious TTE programme. 

The EN-SMM-MRO is responsible for the design, installation, operation and maintenance of the mechatronics systems for the remote control, actuation and positioning of several particle Beam Intercepting Devices in the CERN accelerator complex, as well as in several experimental facilities. EN-SMM-MRO is looking for a recently graduated mechatronic technician to consolidate its team.The EN-STI-TCD section is in charge of the conceptual design, construction, operation and maintenance of special components having direct interaction with high-energy particle beams, so called "beam-intercepting devices". Such devices are installed across the CERN’s accelerator complex, including particle-producing targets, beam absorbers/dumps, collimators, beam stoppers and slits.

Functions

You will join the MRO section and will be involved in all stages of the design, maintenance, upgrade on different platforms (PLC, PXI, VME) of complex control and actuation systems belonging to all the equipment under the group’s responsibility. The technician will mainly deal with advanced moveable devices (e.g. scrapers, collimators, shielding and target) characterized by few um accuracy for their active positioning; these systems must continuously deliver high reliability while working in hard radioactive environments.

In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (https://home.cern/about/member-states);
  • You have a Technical Diploma in electrical, electronics or mechatronics related field (careers.cern/ttediplomas), and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;
  • If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;
  • If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.


You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.

Additional Information

  • An employment contract of one year, renewable for a second year; 
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French;
  • A take-home pay of 3,500 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);
  • Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund;
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;
  • 2,5 days of paid leave per month.
     


Specific skills required for this job:

  • Comprehensive use of electrical and electronic components.
  • Ability in installation and maintenance of complex mechatronics equipment.
  • Experience in cabling.
  • Knowledge of PLC programming software will be an asset.
