About the position

The AI for Industries group at IBM Research – Zurich is working on cutting-edge AI research and applications to transform businesses across industries. We are working on deep learning methods for predictive analytics ) and on explaining our predictions.

We are looking for a research software engineer who is passionate about advancing science and creating the next generation of AI solutions. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to

  • Participate in high-impact projects applying machine learning to large-scale, real-world industrial problems
  • Design and develop software solutions for machine learning (deep learning), big data analysis and time-series modelling with the potential to expand technical focus over time
  • Work in a privileged research environment, file inventions and publish scientific work.


  • PhD or MS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics or a related technical field
  • Strong expertise in software engineering methods, algorithms and data structures
  • Theoretical background in machine learning and statistics
  • Experience with data-processing frameworks such as Hadoop, Spark, Flink, streaming analytics engines, entity linkage engines
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes would be a plus
  • Proficient coding skills in Python and Scala; skills in Java or C++ would be a plus
  • Strong skills in SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL) /noSQL (e.g., Cloudant, Cassandra, etc.) databases
  • Experience with GPU-accelerated scientific libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Caffe2.
