Position

In our digital societies, the pervasiveness of data, technology and artificial intelligence, is providing new opportunities to address the challenges of modern civil engineering. At the interface between architecture and civil engineering, but also environmental engineering as it relates to sensing technology and uncertainty quantification, EPFL’s School of Architecture, Civil and Environmental Engineering (ENAC) will target a strengthening in computational and integrative approaches in the built and natural environments. Civil engineers and architects must re-invent their way of addressing construction and decision making, and how to embed multiplicity of environmental and material parameters in an integrated process. Digitalization has to be integrated at the practice but also at the academic levels.

We are seeking out talented people who will be able to provide innovative solutions in this field. In this context, we invite applications for a Faculty position at the Assistant Tenure Track level.

Faculty Position in
Digital Infrastructure
at the Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)

Description

The successful candidate will have a proven capability to contribute significantly to teaching and scholarship in the broad field of digital infrastructure.

The main topics of interest include:

  • Big data, data reliability and trust with emphasis on their application into civil infrastructure management and design for a structure’s service life.

  • Monitoring techniques and novel sensing technologies for modeling hazards and their impact on structures, spatially distributed infrastructure systems and humans.

  • Smart infrastructure that senses and reacts to be user- and environment-aware including field validation.

  • Quantification and propagation of uncertainty from the level of in-situ measurements and loads to the final design or performance assessment. Infrastructure resilience and energy management efficiency.

EPFL hosts exceptional experimental and computational research facilities.

Requirements

The successful candidate should have a deep fundamental research background including knowledge transfer in civil engineering in general. As a faculty member of the Civil Engineering Section, he/she will excel in undergraduate and graduate teaching and supervise doctoral students.

We offer

With its main campus located in Lausanne and its developing antennae in neighbouring cantons in Switzerland, EPFL is a growing and well-funded institution fostering excellence and diversity. It is well equipped with experimental and computational infrastructure, and offers a fertile environment for research collaboration between different disciplines. The EPFL environment is multilingual and multicultural, with English serving as a common interface. EPFL offers internationally competitive start-up resources, salaries, and benefits as well as exceptional experimental and computational facilities.
