The Chair of Sustainable Construction at ETH Zurich intends to ground sustainability in the disciplines of the built environment. We want to foster collaboration among the different stakeholders involved in architecture, engineering and construction and to promote appropriate application of sustainable construction materials during the entire life cycle of buildings and infrastructure. Senior researcher (50-60%) "Implementation of real-time Life Cycle Assessment in Digital Fabrication"

In traditional Life Cycle Assessment, the analysis is either holistic but very complex and done at the end of the design or simple but not holistic and done in the beginning of the design. Digital fabrication techniques processes offer the possibility to integrate detailed environmental calculation in the very early design phases. Previous research projects at the chair have identified general trends and defined pathways for sustainable construction in digital fabrication (Agusti & Habert, 2017) as well as methods to provide LCA results using BIM (Röck et al., 2018; Cavalliere et al., 2019). In this project, the selected candidate will aim to implement LCA calculations within the design software in the early design phases of the digital fabrication process. The work relies on two key components: parametric LCA and results visualization. The use of parametric LCA will be linked with a tailored environmental database for digital fabrication. The question of visualization and decision support aid will be adapted to the specific requirements of designers involved in the NCCR. The future candidate is also expected to propose research topics and supervise master students. Funding for this position is secured for 3 years and can continue for a longer period, if successful future projects are acquired.

We welcome highly motivated applicants from civil or environmental engineering, computer science, architecture or similar disciplines. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in construction and sustainability and holds a PhD or can justify equivalent experience in practice. The candidate knows design software such as Revit or Rhino. The candidate ideally has programming skills in Python and knows how to use Grasshopper. Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement. Speaking German is an advantage, as many Swiss environmental databases are in German, but it is not required.

We offer working in an exciting project carried out in an interdisciplinary environment with civil engineers, material scientists, computer scientists and architects. The NCCR digital fabrication is gathering over 100 persons, while the Chair of Sustainable Construction is an interdisciplinary group of 10 to 15 people. In the group, we welcome home office on regular basis.
