The Laboratory for Optical Systems offers a

The laboratory for Optical Systems at the University of Freiburg works on nonlinear optics, in particular employing whispering gallery resonators, using state-of-the-art methods and techniques. We develop novel sources for laser light providing unequaled wavelength flexibility and integration density. Doing so, we access spectral ranges that are hard to reach by means of conventional sources. Our research spans from the investigation of fundamental aspects up to practical applications.

The PhD project is part of a pan-European initiative addressing research and technology problems with interdisciplinary importance from the areas of precision frequency metrology, ultrafast data processing, optical-to-RF signal conversion, astronomical measurements and soliton physics. The particular goal of this PhD project is to investigate a novel approach to generate frequency combs by cascading second-order optical nonlinearities in micro-resonators made of non-centrosymmetric crystals. Compared with the conventional approach, they provide advantages, e.g. a lower pump threshold and the possibility of electro-optic tuning.

What you bring with you:

A Masters degree in, e.g., Physics, Engineering, or Photonics. Fun to work experimentally and to conduct in parallel theoretical modeling and simulations. Knowledge and experience in the fields of photonics and materials research is highly desired.

Eligibility criteria:

At the time of appointment, applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date.

Our offer:

We offer an exciting research topic, excellent equipment, and intense supervision embedded into a highly motivated and dynamic team. The project allows to participate in a program comprising international schools, workshops, and temporary transfers to academic as well as to industrial partners such as IBM, Menlo and AIRBUS.

The employment is based on a 36-month full-time contract. The approximate monthly salary is 3.170 ¤ (before employer and statutory deduction). Mobility (600 ¤/month) and family (250 ¤/month) allowance will be provided to eligible researchers.
