Your Mission

The Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs 6,000 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of 16,000 people, including over 10,000 students and 3,500 researchers from 120 different countries.

Post-doctoral Researcher in Computational modelling of hippocampal circuits (W/M)

The EPFL Blue Brain Project (BBP), situated on the Campus Biotech in Geneva, Switzerland, applies advanced neuroinformatics, data analytics, high-performance computing and simulation-based approaches to the challenge of understanding the structure and function of the mammalian brain in health and disease. The BBP provides the community with regular releases of data, models and tools to accelerate neuroscience discovery and clinical translation through open science and global collaboration.

Within the Simulation Neuroscience division we are looking for a Post-doctoral Researcher in Computational modelling of hippocampal circuits (BBP).

Main duties and responsibilities include :
  • Improve the existing large-scale models of rodent hippocampus. The current network models are already the product of several iterations and their emergent behavior can reproduce many features of the hippocampus. The work on the models continues by expanding the region of interest from CA1 (the first region we considered) to the full hippocampus, and eventually by connecting the hippocampus to the rest of the brain. In parallel, the models will include more or more details. For example, we are working on including gap junctions, long-term plasticity, structural plasticity, neuromodulation, glia, vasculature, and so on.
  • Exploit the models to answer outstanding questions in the field, such as information processing in the hippocampus, spatial navigation, memory processes, development of pathological conditions (Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy). The models are designed not to answer one specific question, but for a general purpose. This ensures a larger validity of the models and allows us to potentially test many different hypotheses and make likewise predictions.

Your profile :
  • PhD in Neuroscience, Computational Neuroscience, or related field
  • Experience in the field of hippocampus research
  • Experience in scientific computing software (python, scipy, numpy, Linux)
  • Interest in participating in a collaborative big science project
  • Strong team player and fluent English in speech and writing
Nice to have:
  • Experience in neuroscience data analysis and statistics
  • Experience in version control software, shell scripting and using high-performance computing resources
  • Experience in existing neuroscience tools for neuronal modelling
  • Experience in team leadership

We offer :
  • An internationally visible project in simulation-based research in neuroscience
  • A young, dynamic, inter-disciplinary, and international working environment in a modern working environment (Campus Biotech, Geneva)
  • Possibility to participate in outreach events in Switzerland and abroad
  • Very competitive salary
