The “Additive Manufacturing & Component Reliability” sector of our “Micro&Nano Systems” division is currently offering a:

Metal Additive Manufacturing PhD Position

In order to fully explore the design flexibility of AM for gaining the full advantage of its potential, a step change to multi-material, multifunctional AM is essential. Additive manufacturing techniques allow to get the parts with the higher geometric complexity, the combination of it with the multi-material printing for added functionality make this research domain of the high scientific interest.

Your mission

You will carry out your research work under NPI ESA framework between CSEM, EPFL and ESA focused on the development of Metal SLM process for space application. You will receive training in transversal skills and will have the opportunity to enhance the knowledge in the multidisciplinary field with the emphasis on Material Science and 3D printing. The research will involve the development of new materials, FEM simulations, microstructure characterization, correlation between the printing strategy and microstructure, as well as the quality evaluation of the built part (density, dimensional, mechanical and fatigue properties). This project will lead to a PhD degree that will be defended at EPFL.

Requirements

Your profile

  • A Master degree in Physics or Material Science
  • Good knowledge of metallic material science
  • Knowledge in programming for data analysis is a plus
  • Motivated to do experimental research to obtain an in-depth knowledge in several experimental techniques
  • Creative, innovative mindset and solution-oriented work attitude
  • Fluency in French and excellent level of English
  • Fulfillment of ESA NPI project requirements
