Postdoctoral Researcher in Spatial Ecology/ Restoration Ecology

LocationDübendorf, Zurich region, Switzerland

Your Mission

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

The Department of Surface Waters - Research and Management (SURF) located in Kastanienbaum (Lucerne) has a vacancy for a

The four year position will be part of the HistoRiCH project ("Historical river change - Planning for the future by exploring the mapped past"), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The project aims at extracting, analyzing and utilizing hydrological features from historical maps in the context of practical freshwater management. This interdisciplinary effort will be carried out by the Institute of Cartography and Geoinformation (IKG) of ETH Zurich, the Geoinformatics and Ecohydrology groups of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and the River Restoration group of Eawag.

Within HistoRiCH, Eawag is looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with research experience in spatial ecology or restoration/conservation ecology. The postdoctoral research aims at establishing a better understanding of how historical landscape change impacts on present-day ecology. The successful candidate will investigate the complex interplay between driving factors of landscape change (e.g. urbanization, hydropower production) and the propagation of impacts in space (e.g. accumulation) and time (e.g. time lags). The research will be carried out in close collaboration with two doctoral researchers at IKG and ZHAW in order to build up a spatio-temporal database for deriving guidelines for practical management (e.g., river conservation, wetland restoration).

The position is a four year, non-tenure-track postdoctoral researcher in the SURF Department of Eawag, and closely interacting with our partner institutions IKG and ZHAW. Applicants should have an earned doctorate in a relevant field of biology, ecology, or environmental science and a strong interest in research application and interdisciplinary, practice-oriented research. Excellent communication skills in English and experience in team work are essential. Working knowledge in German or French is an advantage.

Applications must be submitted by 24 January 2020 and should include an application letter describing your interests and their relevance to this position, a CV and list of publications, and the names and contact information of three references. Eawag is an equal opportunity employer. Women are explicitly encouraged to apply. The starting date for the position is anticipated to be in May 2020.
