Your Mission

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

The Department of Process Engineering (Eng) has a vacancy beginning March 2020 for an

for the greywater treatment in the Water Hub NEST project.

The Water Hub is Eawag’s contribution to NEST, a research platform, which allows researchers and industrial partners to test new building technologies under realistic conditions. It is an experimental site, where Eawag researchers can develop and demonstrate technologies for the treatment of separated wastewater streams, i.e. urine, greywater, and blackwater. Separating wastewater streams facilitates the recycling of resources from the wastewater.

The internship will be in the project for the greywater treatment. Treatment and reuse of greywater has the potential to reduce fresh water consumption by at least 50 %, if the treated water quality is sufficient not only for toilet flushing, but also for washing, cleaning, and irrigation. In the Water Hub, there is a new greywater treatment process: membrane bioreactor (MBR) combined with a biological activated carbon filter as post-treatment. This advanced treatment is linked with online monitoring.

Specific Tasks
o Monitor and optimize the operation of the membrane bioreactor and the activated
carbon filter of the full-scale greywater treatment system
o Data processing and sensor maintenance for the monitoring stations in-between
  the treatment steps
o Assisting for different tasks within the greywater team in the Water Hub

You will be part of a multidisciplinary project, developing innovative treatment technologies and covering several aspects of sanitation. It is also an opportunity to work with full-scale prototypes and to learn analytical methods in the lab, as well as to get an insight of ongoing projects in the field of wastewater treatment.
