The Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) offers a wide range of bachelor’s and master’s courses. Its school of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences (HAFL) is an innovative and flexible research and service institution, specialized in the fields of plant productions systems, livestock systems and horse care, international agriculture and rural development, agricultural economics, sustainability and ecosystems.

The Grassland Ecology Research Group at HAFL, in collaboration with the Plant Ecology Section of the Institute of Plant Sciences at the University of Bern, is offering the following vacancy starting on June 1, 2019 limited to 3-4 years

PhD Student in Plant Ecology

Description

Change in grassland functional composition via resource shifts driven by climate extremes

  • Perform plant trait measurements and collect plant community data from a precipitation exclusion experiment across multiple sites in Switzerland
  • Assemble plant communities from seed and conduct an experiment in a common garden to assess the thresholds of grassland drought resistance
  • Collaborate in research projects of the grassland ecology group at BFH-HAFL

Requirements

  • Enthusiastic and independent student with a strong interest in conceptual issues of ecology
  • Excellent Master’s degree in a relevant field of research
  • Experience in experimental ecology and in the design and statistical analysis of ecological experiments
  • Good command of English and ambition to publish in international journals
  • Good knowledge of species in grassland and interest in working in the field
